Groundwater activity exclusions from environmental permits

On 14 March 2017 the Environment Agency added to their suite of online Guidance by publishing information on those extremely low-risk discharges which are not considered groundwater activities but are considered exclusions and as such do require an environmental permit or exemption. This covers:

  • Accidents and natural causes exclusion;

  • Very minor discharges exclusion – also called ‘de minimis’;

  • Risks to human health or the environment exclusion; and

  • Disproportionate cost for land contamination exclusion.
